Eco-tourism is mentioned in several important, albeit non-prescriptive, the official international declarations. These include:

  • Program 0071 Environment (UNEP), 1995;
  • Charter for Sustainable Tourism UNESCO , Lanzarote, 1995;
  • Seville Strategy for Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO, 1995;
  • Declaration of sustainable tourism development , adopted by the Ministers of Tourism and Environment, Asia-Pacific region in 1997;
  • Berlin Declaration - biological diversity and sustainable tourism, signed on the initiative of German Federal Ministry for the Environment at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in 1997, ministers from 18 countries. The signatories to this document, agreed that the fundamental objectives of global environmental policy, maintenance of biological diversity, climate change and the maintenance of reduced consumption of natural resources can not be achieved without the sustainable development of tourism;
  • Principles of ecologically sustainable tourism, UNEP , 2000;
  • Draft International Guidelines for action on sustainable development of tourism, Santo Domingo, 2001. This document is guiding the Council, including the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CDS) as part of the Programme of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The World ecotourism summit in May 2002 was adopted by the Quebec Declaration on Ecotourism, which contains recommendations for the development of ecological tourism in different countries. The summit agreed on the interpretation of the term "ecotourism". It was emphasized that although the phrase ENVIRONMENTAL TOURISM as a tourist of the term has been used for nearly 20 years, the lack of a clear definition of the concept leads to a depreciation of the activity in general. The declaration points out that in otlichieot the concept of "sustainable tourism" concept of "ecotourism" can be applicable only to those forms of tourism aimed at the political and financial support for environmental protection, recognition 'and respect the rights of local and indigenous communities, cultural and environmental education of tourists .
